Research facilities
Towards strengthening cooperative links among research facilities and research institutes
R&D that utilizes hot laboratory facilities that can handle radioactive materials is extremely important to the decommissioning effort. Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) and some private companies and research institutes have hot laboratory facilities, and it is effective for a wide range of related parties to make maximum use of them.
It is also very important for the reinforcement and expansion of industry, academia and government collaboration to increase opportunities for a greater variety of researchers and engineers to cooperate at research sites where national research development projects are taking place, mainly at manufacturers’ development sites as well as in universities’ sites where basic and generic research is being done, and at JAEA research sites.
Additionally, partnership and cooperation among associated organizations are expected in the development/verification facilities where remotely operated machines and equipment are currently being maintained by JAEA in the Fukushima region, the analysis/research facilities of radio-active materials, and International Joint Research Center.
For this purpose, efforts are being made to co-own information regarding test and research facilities owned/planned by each institute.
Research facility information to promote decommissioning R&D in consideration of Decommissioning R&D Partnership Council
The Nuclear Damage Compensation and Decommissioning Facilitation Corporation (NDF) established the Decommissioning R&D Partnership Council with the objective of tying actual decommissioning results to various R&D related to decommissioning and contaminated water management. The Decommissioning R&D Partnership Council expressed the following 4 points on the direction for strengthening cooperation for R&D related to decommissioning and contaminated water management.
1) Releasing and sharing information on the direction of R&D needs and seeds, and building a foundation
2) Strengthening the opportunities for mutual cooperation and expanding participation of diverse researchers
3) Enhancing cooperation at research facilities and research sites
4) Enhancing efforts on developing, securing and circulating human resources
Among those, the following 4 points relate to 3) Enhancing cooperation at research facilities and research sites
- R&D that utilizes hot laboratory facilities that can handle radioactive materials is extremely important to the decommissioning effort. Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) and some private companies and research institutes have hot laboratory facilities, and it is necessary for a wide range of related parties to make maximum use of them.

Based on these policies, with the goal of sharing information on the research facilities owned and planned by each institution and of promoting decommissioning R&D cooperation, sup/supwe selected research facilities that can be considered for future decommissioning R&D※2 from among the research facilities with results including cooperative results for Project of Decommissioning and Contaminated Water Management※1 (limited to publically released information) and shared facilities owned by JAEA, and made that into a table.
Research facilities can be classified as 3 types, “irradiation facilities that handle RI”, “facilities that analyze radioactive material” and “mock-up facilities” and we have organized them in tables.

- Table of facilities that analyze radioactive material (PDF)
- Table of mock-up facilities (PDF)
※1 Cooperative results: Displays results from use of third party facilities in addition to using one’s own facilities.
※2 Selection conditions: for each classification; Radiation facilities: facilities that use high-dose rate radiation equipment; Radioactive substance analysis facilities: facilities with hot laboratory; Mock-up facilities: facilities with large-scale mock-up equipment
